A Kerítés mögött él az Öreg. Hasonlít is valamelyest más öregekre. Olykor jár, ír, olvas, eszik… néha társalog is. Elméje már nem rendezett könyvtár, inkább sérült lemez: megakad, ismétel, ugrik, kihagy, felejt. Emlékei szétcsúsznak, átcsorognak egymásba.

Ott belül a legmélyebb én mégis próbál megmaradni: kapaszkodókat keres, ragaszkodik a megmaradt emlékfoszlányokhoz, makacs motívumhoz, amelyek még képesek összetartani a szétcsúszó tudatot.

Az itt és most-ban való létezés különleges állapota ez, ahol a felejtés váratlan helyzeteket teremt, és az egymásra csúszó emlékszintek talaján válik illékonnyá a valóság.

Bătrânul trăiește dincolo de Gard. Seamănă oarecum cu ceilalți bătrâni. Uneori se plimbă, scrie, citește, mănâncă… și, din când în când, socializează. Mintea lui nu mai este o bibliotecă ordonată, ci mai degrabă un disc zgâriat: se blochează, repetă, sare peste pasaje, omite, uită. Amintirile lui se destramă, amestecându-se unele cu altele.

Totuși, în adâncul său, sinele cel mai profund încă încearcă să reziste: caută repere, se agață de fragmentele de memorie existente, de motive încăpățânate care sunt încă capabile să țină laolaltă conștiința sa care se dezintegrează.

Aceasta este o stare unică a existenței în prezent, unde uitarea creează situații neașteptate, iar realitatea devine efemeră pe terenul instabil al straturilor de memorie care se suprapun.

The Old Man lives behind the Fence. He is somewhat like other old people. Sometimes he walks, writes, reads, eats… and occasionally socializes. His mind is no longer an orderly library, but rather a scratched record: it gets stuck, repeats, skips, omits, forgets. His memories slip apart, spilling into one another.

Yet deep inside, the deepest self still tries to hold on: it searches for anchors, clings to the remaining fragments of memory, to stubborn motifs that are still capable of holding together his disintegrating consciousness.

This is a unique state of existence in the here and now, where forgetting creates unexpected situations, and reality becomes fleeting on the shifting ground of overlapping layers of memory.
